MITSUBISHI MODEL A

O Mitsubishi Model A foi o único automóvel construído pela Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, um membro da Mitsubishi Keiretsu, que viria a ser no futuro a Mitsubishi Motors e foi a primeira serie de veículos a serem fabricados no Japão.
Foi a Brainchield de Koyata Iwasaki, o quarto presidente da Mitsubishi e sobrinho do fundador Yataro Iwasaki, que previa o vasto potencial de veículos motorizados, bem como o papel que poderiam desempenhar no desenvolvimento económico do Japão. Previsto como um veículo de alto luxo para funcionários do governo e altos executivos, o Model A teve de ser fiável, confortável e uma amostra de artesanato Japonês.
O Model A tinha como base o Fiat Tipo A sua produção era cara e acabou por ser construído à mão, com uma cabina feita de lacada branca cipreste. Foram fabricados apenas 22 unidades. Ele não podia concorrer com os Americanos mais baratos assim como a concorrência europeia.
A produção da Mitsubishi foi interrompida após quatro anos. Concentrando-se então na sua bem sucedida Fuso, que fabricava veículos comerciais e o Model A seria o último automóvel da empresa do sector auto de passageiros até ao Mitsubishi 500 de 1960.

Prompted by a request of the Japanese army, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. entered the vehicle manufacturing business in 1917 with the Model A. As Italy was regarded as the most advanced automobile-manufacturing nation of the time, the Model A was based on the Fiat A3-3 and built at the company's Kobe shipyard by Taizo Soda (future vice-president of Shin Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) and others. In 1919, the Model A became Japan's first mass produced passenger vehicle. Although 22 had been built by 1921 (including the prototypes), Mitsubishi stopped production to re-focus on shipbuilding. The vehicle displayed at the Mitsubishi Auto Galley in Okazaki is a reproduction created in 1972 based on historical research into contemporary sources by the automobile journalist Eizo Ikeda with the help of designs and the like drawn up by Heitatsu Igarashi.
