Milestones prior to establishment


1910 Tokyo Gas Industry Co., Ltd. established.

1913 Name changes to Tokyo Gas and Electric Industry Co., Ltd.

1918 Mass production of motor vehicles starts in Japan.

1937 The Automobile Division of Tokyo Gas and Electric Industry Co., Ltd., Automobile Industry Co., Ltd. and Kyodo Kokusan K.K. are consolidated into Tokyo Automobile Industry Co., Ltd.

1941 Name changes to Diesel Motor Industry Co., Ltd.




Milestones after establishment

1942 Hino plant separated from Diesel Motor Industry Co., Ltd. to become Hino Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., and the production of military track-laying vehicles started.

1946 Production and marketing of heavy-duty trailer-trucks, buses and diesel engines commenced, in response to a shift in demand from the private sector.
Name changed to Hino Industry Co., Ltd.




1948 The Sales Department, Hino Diesel Sales Co., Ltd. separated and then re-established.
Name changed to Hino Diesel Industry Co., Ltd.

1949 Hino listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

1950 Production and marketing of heavy-duty diesel trucks and buses began.
The marketing of Japan' s first ever trolley buses began.


1953 Technical collaboration with Renault (France) resulted in the production of the Renault, a passenger vehicle.
Hino-Renault Sales Co., Ltd. established.
The marketing of Japan' s first under-floor engine bus began.


1954 Hino is listed on the Osaka and the Nagoya Stock Exchanges.

1959 Hino Diesel Sales Co., Ltd. merges with Hino-Renault Sales Co., Ltd., and is renamed as Hino Motor Sales, Ltd.
Hino Diesel Industry Co., Ltd. changes its name to Hino Motors, Ltd.

1961 Marketing of the Hino CONTESSA 900, a passenger vehicle, begins.


1963 Operations commenced at Hino plant in Tokyo.

1964 Marketing of the Hino RANGER KM, Japan' s first 3.5-ton medium-duty truck, begins.

1966 Hino Motors, Ltd. and Hino Motor Sales, Ltd. created a business alliance with Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd. (the latter two merged on July 1, 1982 to form Toyota Motor Corporation.)

1968 Small vehicle factory completed within the Hamura plant for the production of the Toyota Hilux.


1971 Mizuho Delivery Center established.

Hino Motors received the Deming Award.

1977 Marketing of Japan's first body-framed touring coach begins.


1980 Operations commenced at Nitta plant in Gunma.

New models introduced for the entire line of medium-duty trucks.
Marketing of KAZE-NO-RANGER series began.

1981 Iruma Delivery Center established.
New models introduced for the entire line of heavy duty trucks.
Marketing of SUPER DOLPHIN series began.

1985 Operations commenced at Gozenyama Proving Grounds in Ibaraki.

1986 Iruma Dispatch Center relocated. Hidaka Delivery Center established.

1988 Domestic sales of the RANGER series reached 500,000 units.

1990 New models introduced for the entire line of large-sized touring coaches.

Marketing of S' ELEGA series began.

1991 Hino announced the production of the world's first hybrid diesel/electric engine system "Hybrid Inverter-controlled Motor & Retarder (HIMR)" powered bus.
Hino participated for the first time in the Camion class at the Paris-Dakar Rally.

1992 New models introduced for the entire line of heavy duty trucks.
Marketing of SUPER DOLPHIN PROFIA series began.

1994 New symbolmark and corporate logo adopted, symbolizing "Hino Motors' Vision for the 21st Century". Hino' s corporate identity promoted.

1995 New models introduced for the entire line of small-sized touring coaches.
Marketing of LIESSE series began.

1996 Hino Motors 21st Century Center established (training facilities and Auto Plaza).


1999 Hamura plant obtained ISO 14001 certification for environmental management systems.


Production and marketing of new model light-duty truck DUTRO began, jointly developed with Toyota Motor Corporation.
Hino Motors, Ltd. and Hino Motor Sales, Ltd. merged to become Hino Motors, Ltd.

2000 Nitta plant obtained ISO 14001 certification.

2001 Head office and Hino plant obtained ISO 14001 certification.
Hino became a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation through the allocation of new shares to a third party.


2002 Cooperative agreement reached between Hino and Scania, a Swedish large-sized truck and bus manufacturer.
Light duty hybrid trucks developed, conforming to new stricter regulations on exhaust emissions, effective as of 2005.


2003 Tamachi office obtained ISO 14001 certification.
Hino attained top position in domestic ordinary truck sales for the 30th consecutive year (FY2002). *

2004 Hino signs Indy 500 Car Racing sponsorship agreement with Penske Racing.
Low emission high-mileage HINO RANGER Hybrid launched


2005 Non-step large-sized hybrid route-bus HINO BLUE RIBBON CITY is released.
Medium-duty truck HINO RANGER is improved to meet new long-term emission regulation and newly released.
Large-size touring coach is fully remodeled to meet new long-term emission regulations, and newly released as HINO S'ELEGA
Heavy-duty truck HINO PROFIA is improved to meet new long-term emission regulation newly released.


2006 Hino Motors Sales Canada, Ltd. began assembling trucks and changed its name to Hino Motors Canada, Ltd.
Cumulative commissioned production of Toyota-brand vehicles reached 10 million units.

2007 Annual overseas unit sales exceeded domestic unit sales for the first time.
Guangqi Hino Motors Co., Ltd. established in China.
Cumulative exports reached one million units.

2008 Hino Motors Manufacturing Colombia, S.A. began assembling trucks.
Hino Motors Sales, LLC established in Russia.
Hino Motors Sales India Private Ltd. established in India.
Low emission high-mileage HINO S'ELEGA Hybrid launched.

A Hino Motors actualmente é uma marca do Grupo Toyota, e representa o seguemento pesado (camiões) da Toyota em todo o mundo, é ainda responsável pela produção de alguns modelos mais ligeiros que são comercializados sob a marca Toyota, como exemplo o moderno FJ Cruiser, réplica dos conhecidos BJ40...

Na realidade a Hino é Toyota, é uma marca usada para o seguemento de veiculos comerciais pesados, incluindo autocarros, e na Ásia existe uma pareceria com a marca Sueca de camiões Scania para a comercialização dos mesmos na rede Hino, havendo mesmo alguns camiões Scania que são vendidos com a marca Hino, é de referir ainda que a Hino representa uma quota de mercado no Japão acima de alguns dos seus mais concorrentes directos, como a Isuzu a Fuso, ou a Nissan Diesel.

Este é dos últimos em Portugal na década de 90 vendido sob a marca Toyota, era vulgar chamarem de Toyota Hino.
