The Daihatsu Charade G10

With the building ,,of the Charade 1000 "in January 1978 began the history of our Charade. In September 1978 follow up  the 3 door model which comes with an very nice small round window in the C-column.
This model, in some countries called "Runabout" never comes to England or Australia.

In this article we call the older one (=Pre-Facelift) 301 and the Faceliftversion with the square headlights 303 in backing to the German classification system.

303 starts 1981 (start built October 1980)

Topmodell XTE with Rev counter, radio and material/imitation leather mixed seats multicolor and sport steering wheel.

XTS special model for Japan 2 color lacquer finish likewise mixed with Rev counter and material/imitation leather seats multicolor and sport steering wheel

XT
Sport steering wheel, rev counter however only with single color material/imitation leather seats

XD however WITHOUT sport steering wheel and WITHOUT rev counter with material/imitation leather seats multicolor

XTE Coupe
rev counter, sport steering wheel, 2 color material/imitation leathers of seats,...

Confusion with the technical data.

In October 1980 starts the built of the model 303

There is some confusion with the technical data, above all which the engine, its capacity and its achievement concerns. First discrepancies emerged only during the introduction 303 in 1981.

301:

Germany: 993ccm³, 37w, compress ratio: 9,0:1, Torque: 72Nm (From: Prospekt from Walter Hagen

und compress ratio from a  newspaper report ,,Rallye Racing 1/1980")

Austria: 993ccm³, 37kw , compress ratio: 8,7:1, Drehmoment: 73Nm (from: Auto Touring, Juni 1980)

Germany: 993ccm ³, 37w, compress ratio: 9,0:1, torque: 72Nm (source: Folder of walter Hagen

and compress ratio from press report ,,rally Racing 1/1980 ")

Austria: 993ccm ³, 37kw, compress ratio: 8,7:1, torque: 73Nm (source: Car Touring, June 1980)

303:

Germany: 986ccm ³, 38kw, compress ratio: 9,1:1, torque: 74,5Nm
Austria: 993ccm ³, 37kw, compress ratio: k.a. torque: 74 Nm
Holland: 993ccm ³, 38.2 KW, compress ratio: 9,0:1, torque: 74,5Nm

Secured facts/differences:

x) Engine code in both cases: CB20
x) Drilling x stroke: 76 x 73 mm
x) With 301 the distributor has only a negative pressure connection, 2 with 303 has an additional Connection at the sealing plate between carburetors and intake manifolds.

Differences 301 and 303

Other hood forum (= "embossments ") and other fender form (see headlight corners)

Tail lamps and tail sheet metal (tail lamps are not exchangeable between 301 and 303)

Differently, the 301 a Zierblech between front sheet metal has bumpers and fenders and
Bumper, turn signal 301 is split in parking light and turn signal contrary to the 303 with....

Front sheet metal differently and taking up for headlights differently, headlight form, mask

301 instrument panel in the equipment XG

On the left of 301 XTE Runabout (3 Türer) WITH AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM (!!), on the right of 303 XTE Runabout 3 door version right

standard model shows 303 above, down equipment ,,XTE "recognizably from the black strip and

the rev counter, but not the 3 door(there in the XTE equipment the sport steering wheel has) that

black strip by the way exclusively gives it with the 303 version!!

x) 301 only one brake hose to the rear, 303 2 brake hoses (the latter does not document in the WHB)
x) Air conditioning system as option only with the 301 version
x) Wiring harness identically between the pre and the 303versio
x) Exhaust system between Coupe and 5 dooris ALIKE
x) Exhaust system between 301 and 303 are NOT identically, can suitably made however the attachment within the middle range are different.

History of Daihatsu during the construction period of the G10 Charade in Germany/Austria

It was a very much moved time in that the G10 was built in Austria and Germany. The importers changed 3 time in Austria and also in Germany were time for the change between the walter Hagen total Ltd. and the Daihatsu Germany total Ltd.

Automeccanica Zebra's outside the Automeccanica factory (1981)

Automeccanica was a Greek automobile producing company. Founded in 1981, it was one of the companies that produced the "passenger-uitlity" type of vehicle popular in Greece at the time for tax categorization reasons. Its creators were former executives of Autokinitobiomihania Ellados (meaning 'Greek Car Industry') a company founded in 1975 to also produce vehicles of this type – it assembled Italian Fissore models based on Fiat products, as well as other Fiat models and variants. Automeccanica followed a different path, building (not just assembling) the Zebra model, a passenger-utility car based on the Daihatsu Charade, as well as assembling the Charade itself. In 1985, when the law favoring the Zebra-type vehicles changed, Automeccanica started licence production of the Soviet Lada Niva model, while it developed its own cabrio-version of the car. In 1988 it acquired its former "father" company, Autokinitobiomihania Ellados and the latter's factory in Thiva. Automeccanica went out of the car-construction business in 1995.
