Nissan's park-proof paint

Nissan has developed the world's first clear paint that is able to repair its own scratches on a car's painted surfaces.

Developed in cooperation with Nippon Paint and four other paint manufacturers, the new clear coat is made from a highly elastic resin material. When a minor scratch (up to 0,01 mm) occurs, the resin material becomes fluid at a molecular level and flows to fill the scratch.

The paint's resealing properties are governed by heat, and at normal temperatures the scratch will be completely gone within a week. The same scratch can also be instantly repaired if heat is applied to the area.

The coating splits when the cut is deeper than 0,01 mm and the paint coat will not be able to seal itself.

And because the new coating is clear, it can be applied to all car colours. The Scratch-Guard Coat remains effective for about three years and can be used effectively to cover a range of scratches ranging from fingernail scrapes and automatic carwash machines, to scratches sustained while driving off-road and parking.

Nissan will first use the new paint coating for a limited edition X-Trail SUV, on which it will be applied to the car's chassis, bumpers, doors and door mirrors, and other parts of its exterior. The Scratch-Guard paint coat will then trickle through to Nissan's other products.
