VEHICLE HISTORY

In 1980, Nissan redesigned their compact pickup truck. The first major change was a change of the sheetmetal. It reflected the hard boxy shapes of the era, however gave the pickup a classic Datsun look. Four round headlights were replaced with square ones, the bed had chrome cargo hooks, the tail lights were integrated better, wraping to the side of the box and the tail-gate latched with a center mounted handle          On the King Cab models, Nissan added two rear folding jump seats and pop-out windows. On all models they improved the dash and instrument cluster. Seating also was improved.          The big news was the four-wheel-drive though. It was designed using a "parts bin" approach. The divorced transfer case was connected to the transmission by way of a short drive-shaft. The rear axle (same as a 2wd unit) was hung from under the leaf springs. The front suspension used slightly modified lower A-arms mounted slightly lower frame mounts. The Upper A-arms were virtually the same and front differential was the same unit as the rear one from the 280ZX.  The four-wheel-drive models also had skidplates under the transfer case, catylist, and splash shield on the fuel tank. Fender flares were also a popular option.          In 1980 the L20B was a carry-over from the 620 series pickups. In 1981 Nissan introduced two engines: the Z22 gasoline engine, featuring dual plug ignition and the Nissan Anti Pollution System. (NAPS-Z) The other engine was the SD22 diesel engine only mated to the five-speed transmission and only in 2wd models. In 1983 Nissan dropped the Z22 and SD22 in favor of a base Z20 engine (MPG models) Z24 gasoline engine, and SD25 diesel engine.  In late 1983 Nissan added a computer controlled carburetor system to California models. By 1985 all models used this system.  Fuel injection also arrived in late 1985 with the Z24i, throttle body injected engine.          In 1983 Nissan dropped the Datsun name on all US and Canada bound models. In addition to this they moved the taillights from under the tailgate to each side f the tailgate. They also revised the front fascia.            The instrument cluster was also improved in 1983, by replacing the individual pods with a one-pod, more integrated design.  Along with these changes, came the addition of a 4-speed HVAC fan.          For the four-wheel-drive models, a beefier suspension was devised. This suspension is still used on current models.           For the 1985 model year, the hooks were removed from the bed rail. and the side became smooth. The tailgate also was made removable.          In 1983 (In fact as early as April of 1982) all US and Canada bound pickups were made in Symnra, TN.          By 1986, Nissan produced the 720 for the last time and began to sell the all new D21 or Hardbody model pickups.
