The B10 was the first of the long running series of "Sunny" models as they are know in their home market. It was launched in April 1966 and displayed at the 13th Tokyo Motorshow in late October of that year. The B10's styling was totally diffent to it's predecessors and gave the car a crisp modern look. Mechanically it was fairly unadventurous with a rigid rear axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear and indpendant front suspension sprung by another leaf spring, this time transversely mounted. It featured drum brakes all round and a new 988cc OHV engine. This new engine was the first in the long running line of A-series engines which were used to power most of Nissan's small cars up until the early '80's. Inside the New Datsun Sunny was fairly spartan but nicely built and still featured two speed wipers and heater and even reclining seats on some models. The car was launched here in the UK in 1967 and was the first Datsun sold here under the title of simply "Datsun 1000", the same name used for it in the Australian market. The Datsun 1000 was eventually available in several body types, two and four door sedans (B10), a wagon and van (VB10), a coupe (KB10) and lastly a pickup (B20).

The general proportions, with it's stumpy trunk look just right but alas, somewhat at the expense if space inside. The B10 was sold as a car to carry five adults. Maybe in Japan, but lanky Europeans will find the rear seat a boit of a squeeze especially in the wagon where even a small adult will be forced to sit sideways due to the lack of legroom. In the front, though there is plenty of room and the seating is fairly comfortable. The deluxe model gets reclining seats as standard, even in the wagon. The interior of Deluxe models is fully carpeted whilst the standard model comes with rubber mats, although carpet was an optional extra.

The B10's body shell is a very strong yet simple design. This is in part responsible for it's ultra low kerb weight of around 640kg. The body is a monocoque design incorporating a suprisingly small number of separate pressings. For example, as you can see in the diagram below, the rear fender, window apeture, sill and door frame are one single pressing as is the roof and scuttle panel (same applies to the wagon). Notice that the front chassis legs, rather than running down under the floor pan as is the norm with this kind of body, run around the inner fender to join with the front of the sill and A post. The wishbone and transverse leaf front suspension means that upper inner fender strengtheners are not required as they would be with a car with Macpherson strut type suspension. Yet another weight saver.

The B10 range is universally powed by the A10 OHV engine. As the "A" prefix might suggest this is the first of the line of A series engines that were used in the Datsun 1200, Datsun B210/120Y and the B310 Sunny as well as a host of other passenger cars, light commercials and even forklifts! This, the original version is just 988cc and features a three main bearing crankshaft, a feature that was dropped in the later A12,14 and 15 engines. In spite of this it is certainly not a weak engine and revs smoothly due to it's very short stroke crank. Output is a fairly modest 62hp (SAE) but this is plenty to pull the lightweight B10. In other respects the A10 is the same as early A12 engines in design (the later A12, A14 and A15 engines are revised with a different block design including engine mountings in a different position and a relocated distributor)

Nissan's small car from the late 1960s


With the introduction of each new model, the Datsun Bluebird slowly grew in size, by the time the 510 was introduced in 1967 the Bluebird could no longer be regarded as a small car. Nissan realised they needed a new smaller model, and the result was the Sunny. The Sunny first rolled of the production line in March 1967. The B10 Sunny changed little during it's life, the only major alterations being to the grille design. The 1967 model has a grille with seven horizontal bars and a tall, narrow emblem in the centre. In 1968 a new 4 door version was also available, the 1968 grille had four horizontal bars with a wider 'D' emblem in the centre, and the 1969 grille has 3 horizontal bars with the same emblem as the 1968 model. It had the new 998cc 62hp OHV 4cyl. A10 engine. A small pick-up version (B20) was also available, there are details about the B20 on the Small Comercial Vehicles page.. Interestingly, the Sunny was built at the Zama truck factory, which probably explains why it's built as strong as a truck! Production ended in June 1970 when it was replaced with the B110 Sunny 1200.

The B20 was based on the new B10 series Datsun Sunny. It has a 988cc 62hp OHV 4cyl. A10 series engine. It was rated at 500kg. In 1969 there was a change to it's grille, the new grille actually made it look more old-fashioned.  A van was also available (VB10) but this was marketed as a passenger vehicle, not as a commercial.

Muito bonito. Era retirar o conta-rotações e colocar os belos dos tampões e ficava lindo.

Nunca tinha reparado no interior deste modelo. O Tablier difere bastante dos sedan´s. O centro do volante tb é novidade. Não conhecia.

The first B10 models were the two door sedan and van/wagon. The van came both with and without rear side windows. The four door sedan followed in 1967 then the coupe and pickup. The two door models were sold in Europe (and were the most popular version) but not in the UK. The UK had the four door and wagon. The most striking feature of the B10's styling is the enourmous glass area and very thin pillars. These large windows were refered to as "Sky-vision windows" in the sales literature. Visibility is of course superb. External detailing is very simple and gives the car a nice un-cluttered look. The angular styling was a big departure from the older small Datsuns who generally had rather rounded shapes.

This model was introduced in 1967. In less than 5 months 30.000 Japanese bought a " Datsun Sunny." The Sunny was developed to compete with the European Opel Kadett, Ford Escort and Simca 1000. In Holland only two models were introduced, the 2 door and the station wagon. The very handsome Coupe unfortunately was never imported into Holland.


The Sunny was equipped with an A10 4-cylinder push rod driven engine. This engine was selected out of 162 prototypes and was specifically designed for this car. Bore x stroke 73x59 mm. Max. power 62 SAE bhp at 6000 rpm; max. torque 85 Nm at 4000 rpm. Compression ratio 8.5 : 1

Hello Nelson,

Just been searching on web sites and all sorts of stuff to find some parts for a KB10 I am building.
Then I saw that you have a bit of info on all sorts of Datsuns so I thought I would send you some info of my Race Car,
Its a B10 2 dr sedan racing in the Group N Historic Class in Australia.
The class basically sets the controlling standards of how the car used to run back in the day when they competed
around Bathurst in the late 60's and early 70's. This is the major race track of Australia
The car flys for it only has 1023cc, but we have set this thing up so well it just screams.. 8,400rpm and still revving.
You can only do minimal things to the car like 1 inch bigger wheels from Standard, twin webbers, extractors, still have to run
the drum brakes all round, but because it's so light, they are excellent and pull up really well..
Okay here's some pics, just thought you might be interested..
Pics are of the car either raced by me or my brother, we take it in turns.
the tracks are Phillip Island, Winton Raceway and Sandown all in Victoria Australia.
The car is for sale, but our new race car is nearly finished Mazda RX-2 4dr Sedan..
