We first thought of titling this post "War Of The Civic Worlds", but we ended up with the palpable "vs thingamajig" -but what am I talking about, let's just get to the point. In Fifth Gear's latest episode, Vicky Butler pitted the European built and marketed 200 Hp Honda Civic Type-R hatch against its Japanese bred spouse, the 225 Hp Civic Type-R Sedan. Don't worry, we've no intention of spoiling the party by telling you who won. -Click "Read More..." to see the video

Honda lança Civic Type R Mugen no Reino Unido

There is method to this fiscal madness, however, the establishment of Honda engine tuner Mugen in the minds of UK petrolheads being the aim. We Brits buy more Type R Civics than any other country, including Japan, presenting this tuning specialist with a tempting commercial opportunity. Mugen means "unlimited" – supposedly of power, rather than price – and though it's owned by the Honda family, with a history stretching back to 1973, it operates separately from Honda.

Unusually, the process of making these 20 special Civics occurs entirely in the UK, Honda shipping British-built Type Rs from its Swindon plant to Mugen's premises in Northampton. The priciest element is the total strip-down and high-precision rebuild of the engine into what's virtually a full-race, hand-built £19,000 motor.

A new air intake, redesigned pistons and camshafts, the deletion of the balancer shaft, a revised electronic control module and a fiendishly complicated, twin-tailpipe exhaust in stainless steel are part of the package, though it's mostly labour that runs up the bill.

The result is a 39bhp power boost to 240bhp, a 10 per cent torque uplift and a rev limit stretched to a yelling 8,600rpm. A limited-slip differential, 32 per cent lighter alloy wheels, UK-tuned suspension, upgraded brakes and a bodykit are also provided.

Despite that high price there are options, too, including stickier Yokohama rubber and the replacement of the rear seat by a composite bulkhead, cutting another 86kg over the 20kg already pared from the standard car.

Horsepower watchers may instantly conclude that 240bhp for £38,599 compares poorly with the 300bhp, £26,995 Ford Focus RS, but Honda claims that the Civic will circumnavigate the Nürburgring 2.7 seconds per lap quicker.

We enjoyed a flashing sample of this prowess at a tight little test circuit in Japan, which the Mugen tore around with electrifying verve. It feels intoxicatingly close to a full-on, no-holds-barred racer, the thrill heightened by the super-sharp responses of throttle, wheel and brakes.

Yet this is an easy car to drive, and one that deploys its substantial power with tidy aplomb. The Mugen engine delivers its greatest work close to that lofty red line, and with a staccato crescendo that has us yearning to stretch it in every gear around a test track that was almost as smooth as the Honda's Championship White paint.

Just one sudden crest severely tested its mid-bend stability – but it was not found wanting. The Civic resists tyre-trashing understeer through all but the tightest turns, and has heart-calmingly effective brakes, too.

What we don't know is how it will cope with Britain's B-road bumps. Its behaviour over those will determine whether this ultra-pricey hatch is worth considering despite that eye-widening price.

For some Type R fans, the prospect of owning so rare a car – and the curious bargain that it represents – will prove irresistible. And after that, expect more tuned cars and components from Mugen – including hot hybrids.

Apesar do preco ser puxado, aliás, muito puxado visto que um Civic TypeR normal, custa 18.000£ como foi escrito, deve ser uma brutalidade conduzir este carro....

Nearly all of the 200 Type R Mugens  have been sold. If you've not yet ordered or don't fancy paying £38,599 for the most banzai Civic ever, then you'll be pleased to know that Honda has now introduced this - the, er, Type R Mugen.

Alright, so this one's the '200' edition, as that's how many will be made. It's based on a standard Type R but gets a limited-slip diff and some other Mugen goodies including bumpers and sideskirts, alloys, badges, glossy black door mirrors and the same white paint as the 'Championship White' edition.

This may seem a little confusing, but the idea goes like this: Honda reckons this Mugen 200 is a platform for tuning. You'll be able to buy a Mugen-approved engine, suspension and bodywork upgrades through Honda dealers, so you can spec it to look visually identical to the 237bhp, tall-winged, real-deal Mugen Type R. However, though you can spice up the 200's power, you can't completely reproduce the faster car's engine, which features bespoke engineering.

Whatever the amount of personalisation you choose to shower on the Mugen 200 (careful or you could spend upwards of £50k), one thing's for sure - you'll love the screaming V-TEC and hard-working diff that gives this car a sort of junior touring car feel. A boggo Type R is a satisfyingly hard-revving thing, but the extra bits on this special edition somehow intensify it further. Just go easy on those options.

Fifth Gear  Thursday 08 September 2011

Honda tuning specialists MUGEN have released a quicker, extremely limited edition version of the very special Civic Type R MUGEN released in 2010.

The new MUGEN 2.2, so called because the engine's main upgrade is an increase in displacement to 2.2-litres from 2.0, may be limited to just four.

Only 20 copies of the 2010 MUGEN Civic Type R were made, each at a cost of £40,000. Steep, yes, but each was stripped down and rebuilt by hand at MUGEN's Northampton base; the company estimates that the actual cost of building each MUGEN was closer to £60,000.

This new version increases power from 240bhp to 260bhp, meaning that compared to a standard Civic Type R, power and torque are up by 30 percent.

There are no performance statistics, but 0-62mph will be done in around five seconds. MUGEN says that the car "represents the ultimate expression of the Honda Civic Type R philosophy."

There are currently four unsold MUGEN Type R cars at the company's base, waiting for buyers – it is these cars that MUGEN says it may convert. Existing owners can have the upgrade done too, if they feel they've not already spent enough money on their Japanese family runabout.
