The Datsun 510 was introduced in 1968 as a direct competition for the BMW 1600. It first appeared as a 2 & 4 door sedan and Station Wagon. The 1st Generation 510 featured front disc brakes amd an independant rear suspension. It was powered by the L16- a 1.6 Litre OHC Inline 4 cylinder engine wth a rated Horsepower of 96 from the factory. The 510 Station Wagon was discontinued after the 1972 model tear, and the sedan was discontinued in 1973. The 510 was replaced by the Datsun 710.

The 510 was reintroduced for the 1978 model year to replace the 710 as Datsun's mid-size car. The second-generation 510 was initially availible in 4 body styles: 2 door Sedan, 4 door Sedan, 2-door Hatchback (Coupe) and 4-Door Station wagon. The 2nd generation 510 lacked the independant read suspension of its predecessor, owning to the fact it was not intended for racing. It was powered by the L20B engine, a de-tuned version of Datsun's L20B racing engine. The L20B was essentially the same engine as the L16, but displaced 2.0L. The L20B engine was rated at 97 HP in 1978 (without the restrictive emissions equipment; the L20B was capable of over 150 HP when tuned properly) and 92 HP in 1979. 3 Transmission types were availible: A 4-Speed manual, a 5-Speed manual, and a 3-speed automatic. The 5 speed was not availible on the 78-79 Station wagon, nor was the 4-speed availible on the Hatchback.

The 510 was given a slight "facelift" in 1980, in which the 2-door Hatchback was replaced by a 5-door HB, the grille was redesigned, the round headlamps were replaced with square ones, and the dashboard was rearranged. Under the hood, the venerable L20B was replaced with the Z20S, which had the same HP rating as the '79 L20B but featured 2 spark plugs per cylinder and a cross-flow head. The 1981 510 had the option of having the Z20E engine, which featured electronic fuel injection and 100 HP. 4-speed, 5-speed, and Automatic transmissions were availible on all models.

Second generation 510's were built by Nissan Motors, Inc in both Tokyo and Yokohama Japan, and were availible only in North America. The 510 was part of the Datsun A10 series which also included the 140J, 160J, and 160J Violet. The J series cars had the same body as the 510, but had small differences. The grille had completely round headlight frames, the bumpers were lighter and non-shock absorbent, and the car was availible in a Righthand-drive configuration. The 160J was powered by the L16 engine (the same engine that powered the 1st generation 510) and the 140J was powered by the OHV 1.4 litre A14 engine used in the B210. The Datsun A10 series was discontinued at the end of the 1981 model year, and was replaced by the Nissan/Datsun Stanza.
